Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (2024)

You have three available thermostat modes: heat, Eco and off. Here’s what each mode does and how to manually switch between them.

Both your thermostat and system will behave differently depending on what mode your thermostat is set to.

Switch between heating and off modes

You can easily switch between modes on the Nest thermostat with the Nest app.

On the Nest thermostat:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to open the Quick View menu.

  2. Select a new mode:

    • Nest Learning Thermostat:Turn the ring toModeSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (1)and press to activate it. Or selectEcoSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (2)and press to select.

  3. Press the ring to confirm.

Home app

  1. Open the Google Home appSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (3)
  2. Tap Favourites Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (4) or Devices Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (5)
  3. Tap your thermostat.
  4. Tap the temperature mode icon at the bottom left.
    The icon will be different depending on which mode your thermostat is currently in.
  5. Choose the mode that you want.

Nest app

  1. Select the thermostat that you’d like to control on the app home screen.

  2. Tap theModeiconSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (6)at the bottom of the screen to bring up the mode menu.

  3. Tap on the new mode for your thermostat.

Switch to Eco Temperature

Switching to Eco Temperature is done in much the same way as switching between heating and off modes, but there are some differences.

Things to bear in mind

  • When you manually switch to Eco, your thermostat will ignore all scheduled temperatures until you manually switch it back to heating.

  • If your thermostat automatically switched to Eco because everyone was away, it will switch back to your normal temperature schedule when someone comes home.

On the Nest thermostat:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to open the Quick View menu.

  2. Turn toEcoSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (7)and press to select.

  3. SelectStart Eco.

If your thermostat is already set to Eco, selectStop Ecoand your thermostat will return to its regularheating schedule.

With the Nest app

  1. Select the thermostat that you’d like to control on the app home screen.

  2. SelectEcoSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (8)on the bottom of your screen.

  3. TapStart Eco. If you have more than one thermostat, select whether you want to start Eco Temperature only on the thermostat that you’ve chosen or all thermostats.

To turn off Eco:

  1. Select the thermostat that you’d like to control on the app home screen.

  2. SelectEcoSet your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (9)on the bottom of your screen.

  3. TapStop Eco. If you have more than one thermostat, select whether you want to stop Eco Temperature only on the thermostat that you’ve chosen or all thermostats.

Thermostat modes

Heat

Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (10)

  • Your thermostat will start heating to try to maintain anyscheduled temperaturesor a temperature that you’ve manually selected.

Off

Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (11)

  • When your system isoff, it will only heat to try to maintain your
    safety temperature.

  • Your heating will not turn on to meet any scheduled temperatures
    and you won’t be able to manually change the temperature until you
    switch your thermostat to another mode.

  • If your thermostat controls hot water, you’ll still be able to control it in
    off mode.

Eco

Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off (12)

  • Your system will try to heat your home to theEco Temperature.

    Note:The Eco Temperature was set during thermostat installation,
    butyou can change itat any time.

  • If you manually set your thermostat to Ecoor you set your home to
    Away, it won’t follow its temperature schedule. You’ll need to switch it
    to heating mode before you can change the temperature or go back
    to your regular schedule.

  • If your thermostat automatically set itself to Ecobecause you were
    away, it will automatically return to its regular schedule when it
    notices that someone has arrived home.
